The Green Leaf | Concept

In Austin, Texas one third of the population of parents are single and contribute to the number of single parent families. With one parent being the primary provider this creates the issue of before and aftercare for those children while the parent is at work. The shared space that we created is affiliated with the University of Texas in Austin and offers design help to the public with an emphasis on educating parents and children on the importance of functional, and sustainable design. This space has room for presentations and community meeting space to accommodate twenty-three people.

There is individual workspace where parents can interact and create things on their own or work with a designer one on one for personalized help. The second floor is dedicated to the students and faculty that come in to design and assist in the shared space. There is a studio with room to pin up projects and ideas on a board as well as horizontal layout space. The faculty has their own offices, there is a conference table for group discussions and bar space to sit and set up a laptop. In the community greet and receptionist space biophilic design is prominent and encourages learning more about sustainable features.

There is an atrium you can walk into that has a dense plant variety, natural light, and a water feature. Through the space biomorphic shapes and patterned are display with the living plant walls, tree stump wall covering, and river tile design throughout the entire first floor. A parent’s education level is one of the most influential predictors of a child’s educational success. Here at Blank we encourage the parents to take classes here and at the university to better themselves and their children because more education equals higher learning, which can end the families cycle of living in poverty.
