Emerging Reflection | Concept

The proposed site sits between Pear and Fig Streets, billed as a communal area, the new structure will become a reflection space for the community to utilize during their visits to the Lutheran Cemetery. Along Eddie Robinson Sr. drive, the cemetery is directed north of the site. The water surrounding the Portico will aid in the user’s deep thoughts and reflection, bringing to mind the awe of nature recalling both the serenity and destruction that water can cause in extreme cases of Louisiana’s history of the Great Flood of 2016 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Both the Sexton and Social Space is built up as a berm to hold the water within the space gently transitioning from the tranquil water line reveals the bedrock. This covered area is joined with walking pads over the water connection the Sexton and Social Spaces. An additional path offers handicap access to the Cypress Wall Seating. A corrugated roof protects the main area from the elements transitioning to a trellis made of rebar to the outside lawn. When raining, the rebar will create a spiral effect with the falling water on the site. Sitting in the reflection space, users can sit and peer out on the sloping terrain to the cemetery below.
